Scrappy Bear Paw from Wendy's Quilts and More

Can you believe this is my most viewed blog post ever? Click here to read about my Scrappy Bear Paw quilt.

Yes, people just love my Scrappy Bear Paw quilt.  I suspect it's because of the bright colours that I chose, and the simple hand quilting with Perle 8.

Maybe I shouldn't have allowed my son to take it to his university hostel.  Actually, I don't mind.  I can always make another one when our guild turns 50 years old which is now only 12 years away.

The display at Capital Quilters when the guild turned 30 ...

Another talk from Wendy's Quilts and More

Last week I was the guest speaker at Rose City Quilters in Palmerston North, this week I was the guest speaker at Capital Quilters in Lower Hutt.

Yes, I had a last minute invitation to be the guest speaker at Capital Quilters last weekend.  Unfortunately I couldn't let you know, because like Palmerston North, the meeting was restricted to members only, with a maximum of 100 attendees.

I hadn't really unpacked from my Palmerston North trip, so it was easy enough to scoop up a few quilts and put them in the car.  I changed my talk up ...

String Carpenter's Star from TheEclecticAbuela

If you have read my blog (or just looked at the pictures!) you know that I delight in string blocks. This is my latest string project.

String Carpenter's Star (82" x 82")

Carpenter's Star (sometimes called Carpenter's Wheel) is a traditional pattern, and layout charts are available in many places online (the one I used is HERE), but I substituted string blocks for the regular color or print blocks.

I drew it on EQ8, so I could get an idea of what I would need.

EQ8 Plan--I did change the four corners to string blocks rather than ...

Friday Quilt Finish: Color Outside the Lines is Ta-Done at Last! from Cheeky Cognoscenti

63 x 63 Color Outside the Lines, Bear Paw + Sawtooth Star Blocks

Happy Friday, y'all!  I have a quilt finish to share with you today!  I finally put the last hand stitches into the binding of my Color Outside the Lines quilt last night, wrapping up a languishing WIP (Work In Progress) that I started way back in 2014.  Woo-hoo!

I Hope You Appreciate the Azaleas...

I goaded my grouchy and reluctant husband into driving around with me to find a photo location with azaleas in the exact shade of pink as the hand dyed fabric patches in the ...

Another Month, Another Goal... Or Two: Of Bear Paws and Kaleidoscopes from Cheeky Cognoscenti

I was long-winded on the topic of that vintage Economy quilt yesterday, so today's post is going to be Short and Sweet!

I have a Major Goal for April as well as a Minor Goal.  The Minor Goal is to get my Color Outside the Lines bear paw quilt off my WIP list.  That entails labeling, binding, and hand finishing the binding on this one.  After clearing off the heaps of fabric debris on the cutting table from my kaleidoscope, I finally had room to trim the bear paw quilt and machine embroider its label yesterday.

Machine Embroidered Label ...

Baby Paw from Sew Sunshine

This week was either wind and rain, or wind and cold or just wind. I have been chomping at the bit to get out and get some photos. Today it was sun and wind so I went out. I had moments when the quilt almost went into orbit but caught a few to share at least.

This is a Baby Paw. I have a great nephew that this is going to even though he just turned one already. ( I actually have his big brothers quilt even though he will turn 4) I digress.... ha

I had a bunch of solid ...

The Supreme Yumminess of the Hand Marbled Fabrics and the Graffiti Quilting from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Earlier this week, since I was all caught up with customer quilts and right on-track with the kaleidoscope blocks I'm making for Anders' high school graduation quilt, I finally -- FINALLY -- got my UFO Bear Paw quilt out of the Purgatory closet and loaded it on my frame for quilting.  I am so excited to finally be finishing this quilt for myself!  I stewed over how to quilt this one for three years, but when I discovered this digital edge-to-edge quilting design, Graffiti E2E #7, by Karlee Porter,  I knew it would be perfect for this top.

I'm Loving ...

The Fabulousness That Is February: One (or More) Monthly Goals from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Hello, my lovelies!  Happy Thursday, and happy FEBRUARY!  Now that I have replenished my supply of Kona Solid in Ocean, I came close to finishing two more sampler blocks for my Retro '80s Building Blocks quilt last night.  The 10" block below wasn't quite done yet when I took this photo:

Progress on Another 10 Inch Sampler Block

All of my block sections had been foundation paper pieced and trimmed, but they still needed to be pieced together and, in order to nest the seams the way I wanted them for crisp, perfectly matched seam intersections, I designed my ...

A Take On Bear Paw from Let's Begin Sewing

As my blog posts get more scarce, so is my quilt making. However in the past month a lot of quilts I made earlier have come into the limelight. Let me start with the first one.  A variant on the Bear Paw block.

This quilt was a long time in the making. About 3 years ago when I was undergoing physical therapy, while recovering from a knee injury I would find myself often staring at my shoes. The colors of the shoes really struck a chord with me and I decided to use them in my next quilt. Inspiration comes ...

It has been a VERY long time since I've posted. I've been working on projects, but life has kept me very busy!

I've a couple of finishes to show you. First, a bear paw quilt.

Bear Paw (79" x 97")
For the pads of the paws, I used string blocks of scrappy browns. I finished it with a string border.

Bear Paw (detail)

I also finished my Celtic Solstice. I used constant blender fabrics--I wanted the pattern to shine!

Celtic Solstice (78" x 78")

The dark color is actually a very dark brown rather than black as ...

The Quilter's Field Guide to Color ~ Context from Charm About You

Bear paw quilt block surrounded by fabrics used to sew the block

This is not just any book about colour, this is The Quilter's Field Guide to Color by Rachel Hauser.  I am not exaggerating when I say that this book is a game changer for me. I have learnt so much from reading it and not only through the practical advice Rachel gives but the actual EXPERIENCE of working through the exercises in the book. It's so much more than just information about colour (although it has got lots of that), it is packed full of genuinely helpful topics around colour. With excellent examples, tips and exercises to get ...
